Welcome to Tokyo 3

Arrival in Tokyo

We are March 14, 2017 and the ANA flight from Brussels to Tokyo just landed in Narita Airport under the rain. I couldn’t believe that I brought the Belgian weather with me… but wait… I am in Japan! Happy but not really excited (well maybe I was too tired to jump around) but before leaving the plane I wanted to take a picture with the wonderful flight attendants who took good care of us during the flight, thank you ANA!

Welcome to Tokyo 4

Quick check to TSA and grabbing my luggage then “Hello Tokyo!”. I was breathing the fresh air of Japan that I expected for so long. After exchanging my JR Pass coupon to get the JR Pass itself and getting my Suica card, I took the elevator to the post office to pick the pocket wifi that I rent (yeah I needed to be connected all the time during my trip to Japan and I heard so many great things about these pocket wifi that I was excited to try them).

Welcome to Tokyo 5

After purchasing my bus ticket, I just sat down waiting for the bus to arrive and getting familiar with the use of the pocket wifi. Few minutes before the arrival of the bus, I was lining up at the bus stop and exchanged my first Japanese sentences with some young ladies who were waiting for the bus too. Even if I was just able to speak basic sentences they were congratulating me on my Japanese (I am already loving Japan!).

On the way to the city

The ride from Narita to Tokyo was one hour long, the welcoming light of the city started showing. The feeling was really special it was like you are reading a book about a place and just by magic you find yourself instantly in the middle of that place. I forgot that I was tired and I couldn’t help but turning my head and enjoying this wonderful scenery. Arrived at Tokyo Station , I had my luggage given to me by the man who were in charge of getting them out of the bus, I thank him and I just pull out my mobile phone and turn on Google Maps. It was time for me to took my first Japanese train to Iriya station where my guesthouse was located.

A few minutes of walk later, I arrived at the metro station where I asked for my way (still with my few Japanese) and I get the directions given to me by a man I stopped at the station. He asked me like twice “Wakarimasuka?” (Do you understand?) and both time I answered “Hai, arigatou gozaimasu”. The funny thing was that I did understand everything he told me, thanks to my Japanese Vocabulary learning (well thanks to Wanikani!). Few minutes later, after passing my Suica card for the first time, I was in the metro in Japan for the first time. It was not at a rush hour so the metro was not crowded but I had to see the famous salarymen heading home, with my eyes blown away by the lights of the city through the window. Dropping at Ueno station , I had the choice to either take another metro to Iriya Station or walk for 15 mns. Guess what I chose? Walking of course! It was raining but I wanted to have my first steps in the streets of Tokyo and I didn’t regret it. It took me a little time to arrive at the guesthouse but I made it safely. It was around 8pm so I checked in, put my luggage in the room and hit a 7-eleven for my first Japanese Curry. Even if it was from a convenient stores it was so good! After that I walked a little bit around the blocks and came back for a good night before exploring Tokyo.
